Re: [-empyre-] shared canvas annoyance, wikis, blogs.

Hi y'all, I'm really pressed for time for the next few days so I'll spare you all from most of my innane comments...

>But could you please explain the difference between shared canvas
system like you're building and VJ'ing? Is there a difference?
Hmmm well Adrian previously mentioned a "distributed collaborative realtime
polymedia performance" (system) which is a good description.
VJing being like DJing in that you can mix different channels of media (ie with two video channels) and synthesize a new one... you warp / mutate / blend / do whatever your hardware / software lets you do. Basically: make pretty eyecandy that goes with the music (I might get slapped for saying that:).

The software I'm working on like others allows you to do this with all digital media types, although media could come from your hard drive or a live camera stream from tokyo or whatever. Keystroke is great, tho only works on macs (which is fine as far as I'm concerned ;p ) mine is writen in java and I think I'm gonna make it open source as its difficult to find time and keep up with other large teams of programmers, especially as I have more precious projects I'm working on atm:)

>Watching other people's MOO conversations without
>participating is, likewise, deathly dull.
Hmmm, perhaps tho years ago in my mudding daze I later found out I had some bemused creators invisibly watching some of my bizzare and surreal netsex encounters... *blush*

>yes but if you're not musically literate or jazz literate or whatever
then it still largely remains unintelligible and often sounds like
noise.
Yep, which is why so much "popular" music to me is often like a million variations on a big mac... sugary, greasy, plastic and designed for fast unthinking consumption (<3min). I still like to think that if people were openminded enough then they can still enjoy free jazz (or maybe they need more beer / wine or something...) hmm listen to some later works by John Coltrane (as this was in the 60's I've heard halucinagenics can open a door/ear of understanding for those so inclined...) it took me 2 years at jazz school to really start to get into this music...

best wishes,
damien
